The Karelian Institute at the Faculty of Social Sciences and Business Studies, University of Eastern Finland engages in basic and applied multidisciplinary research in the humanities and social sciences. Within the framework of project activities, we support the supervision of postgraduate studies and researcher training, and participate in undergraduate teaching. Commissioned research related to the university's societal service mission is also carried out at the institute. The thematic areas in research are: Regional and Rural Studies, Ethnicity and Culture, and Borders and Russia. The Karelian Institute was founded in 1971. Also part of the institute are Spatia Centre for Regional Research and VERA Centre for Russian and Border Studies.
The University of Cagliari (Università di Cagliari - UniCa), founded in 1620, is a public state University with about 25,000 students and about 1,900 teaching and technical administrative staff. It's located on the island of Sardinia (Italy).
UniCa is a point of reference for higher education and research activities, it’s composed of 6 faculties, 15 departments, 1 university hospital, and about 100 undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate programmes covering almost every field of knowledge. UniCa encourages its faculties to participate in international research programmes, promotes scientific and technological collaboration with foreign universities and counts a wide international network. It has consolidated relationships and exchanges with the southern Mediterranean countries. UniCa is also a member of EDUC – European Digital UniverCity, the European Universities funded in 2019 by the European Commission.
ALDA is a global alliance of local and regional authorities and civil society actors working together with a participative approach for resilient, inclusive, and sustainable communities. To promote good governance and citizen participation at the local level in the whole of Europe and beyond, ALDA leads a wide range of actions supporting stakeholders in achieving their goals in the fields of European integration, decentralisation, human rights, social inclusion, sustainable development, civic initiatives and much more. It works with a multistakeholder approach looking at a broad spectrum of the potential resources in the local communities. The Association has a network of 300 members, including local and regional authorities and civil society associations from more than 40 different countries.
The Kiel Institute for the World Economy sees itself as the research institute in Germany for globalization issues. Our researchers investigate the drivers and effects of international economic activity, the integration and disintegration of global markets as well as the opportunities and limits of political action in open economies. The Institute analyzes the world economy not just as the sum of individual national economies, but rather as a global economic area that must be understood and shaped. We have tasked ourselves with identifying emerging global economic challenges and developing practical solutions that are compatible with open markets and competition while also taking account of everyone’s standard of living.
The Economic and Social Research Institute (ESRI) is an independent research institute working towards a vision of 'Informed policy for a better Ireland'. The ESRI seeks to support sustainable economic growth and social progress in Ireland by providing a robust knowledge base capable of providing effective solutions to public policy challenges.
The ESRI brings together leading experts from a variety of disciplines who work together to break new ground across a number of research initiatives. Internally, the Institute organises its research across 11 research areas: Behavioural Science, Competitiveness, Trade, and FDI, Education, Energy, Environment and Infrastructure, Growing Up in Ireland, Health and Quality of Life, Labour Markets and Skills, Macroeconomics, Migration, Integration and Demography, Social Inclusion and Equality, and Taxation, Welfare and Pensions.
Academia de Studii Economice din Bucuresti (The Bucharest University of Economic Studies - Academy of Economic Studies of Bucharest - AES) is the most prestigious university for economics and public administration education in Romania. The Research Centre for Macroeconomic and Regional Forecasting (PROMAR) of this university covers a large research area in the field of macroeconomic analysis and forecasting (sustainable economic growth, macroeconomic correlations, sectoral correlations, environmental sustainability, international flows, European integration, etc.) as well as in regional economics, forecasting and policy (sustainable regional growth, Cohesion Policy, territorial inequalities, spatial justice, institutional transformations, behavioural challenges, social services of general interest, etc.).
The Centre for European Regional and Local Studies (EUROREG), based in the University of Warsaw is one of the country's leaders in interdisciplinary research in regional and local studies and policies. EUROREG has conducted research in collaboration with 128 institutions from 33 countries, including European Commission, World Bank, OECD, UNDP, top-class universities, think tanks and practitioners. The Centre offers a four-semester postgraduate (MA) programme.
The Faculty of Science was established in 1920 as the fifth faculty of Charles University. Nowadays the faculty is academically and organizationally divided into four sections: biological, geographical, geological and chemical. The main mission of the Faculty of Science is to create highly qualified experts in biology, chemistry, geography, geology and in other interdisciplinary fields. Its scientific and research effort aims to solve key problems concerned with the development of human society.
Researchers in the geographical institute study a wide variety of natural and social phenomena and processes along with their mutual interactivity in forming perceived landscapes. The integration and cooperation of physical and social geographers, demographers and geo-information specialists at a common workplace make possible the interconnection of specialised analyses to create a complex, comprehensive view of significant problems of the modern world.
The researchers of the Institute of Development Economics of the University of Toulon work on different fields of economics of development such as urban and regional economics, Migration and residential mobility, environmental economics, and economics of the sea. The Institute hosts 12 full-time researchers and more than 20 PhD students. The Institute publishes the journal Region et Développement. Alexandra Schaffar is the Head of the Institute since 2019. The Institute is located at the University of Toulon which strongly specializes in maritime sciences.
The Faculty of Spatial Sciences is a growing faculty with an open character. We have short lines between staff and students. We focus on geography, demography and spatial planning. Our vision is of a society that is spatially transformed in ways that allow for high levels of well-being and innovation. Our mission as a faculty is to undertake and disseminate, via research and teaching, world-leading and highly distinctive research which helps to realize this vision.
Our researchers are driven to understand the relationship between places and people. With regard to today’s societal challenges - a growing world population, increased settling in urban areas, the effects of climate change - how to develop our places in a sustainable way becomes important. We derive our inspiration for studying these problems from across the globe. Our research domain is the world and our urban laboratory often the Netherlands. Studying the complexity of the relationship between people and places in various and diverse settings, locally, regionally and internationally increases the relevance of our research and teaching. It follows that we disseminate our findings and insights locally, regionally, and internationally. This is also reflected in our staff, which is internationally diverse.
With two bachelor and seven master programmes, all of which in English, we educate our future place-makers to make neighbourhoods, cities, regions and countries better. As the only independent Faculty of Spatial Sciences in the Netherlands, our focus is entirely spatial.

The Regional and Urban Economics research group of the ABC (Architecture, Built Environment and Construction Engineering) Department, at Politecnico di Milano, has long-lasting expertise and international reputation in regional and urban issues, especially related to technological development, regional inequalities and scenario building and modelling.
The University of Thessaly was founded in 1984 and welcomed its first students in the academic year 1988-1989. Administratively based in Volos, it has developed in the whole region of Thessaly and Central Greece in Volos, Larissa, Lamia, Karditsa and Trikala. The UTH is organized in 8 Schools, 37 Departments and 71 Post-graduate Study Programs.
36,622 undergraduate and approximately 4,500 post-graduate students and doctoral candidates are currently studying at our University. It is staffed by 844 faculty members and 427 members of administrative personnel. Teaching is also supported by a large number of contractual instructors.
