The migration of Sardinian college students: ESSPIN’s research in the regional weekly newspaper “Il Portico”


Interviewed by journalist Dr Roberto Camparetti, for the weekly Sardinian newspaper “Il Portico,” Prof. Ivan Etzo [ESSPIN Researcher for University of Cagliari] talked about the phenomenon of Sardinian university students’ migration to Northen or Central Italy. The Sardinian phenomenon follows the national trend: At the level of southern Italian regions, including Sardinia, 25 percent of young people choose to study in in northern or central Italian regions.

The reasons encouraging this choice are mainly two:

  1. Job opportunities in the island
  2. The lack of student housing

What possible solution? Increasing Italy’s investment in tertiary education also using to European funds.
